Born and raised on a family Dairy farm in the village of Welton, just south of Carlisle on the northern edge of the lakes,
Alison’s childhood was steeped in the rhythms of rural Cumbria. Days were spent outdoors - riding ponies, walking the fells, breathing in that unmistakable mix of fresh air and freedom that defines life in this part of the world. It was, by all accounts, an idyllic upbringing. But it was inside a small cottage kitchen, watching her great aunt at work, where something deeper began to take shape.
Kathy Bell was well known locally for her exceptional baking - the kind that draws people in, that lingers in memory long after the last crumb has gone. Alison remembers standing quietly, watching as ingredients were transformed into something extraordinary. It was her first glimpse of what baking could be - not simply a skill, but an act of care, creativity and connection.
And yet, like many, Alison’s path did not immediately follow her passion.
For years, she worked in construction - a world away from the softness and artistry of the kitchen. It was practical, reliable, but ultimately unfulfilling. “Nothing made me feel alive,” she reflects. The turning point came not through careful planning, but through a moment of instinct.
When her son Archie turned one, Alison decided to bake him a birthday cake – but not just any cake. She wanted it to feel special, to mark the moment properly, and instinctively found herself drawing on everything she had absorbed over the years. Within a remarkably short period of time, Alison made the bold decision to leave her job and commit fully TO HER CRAFT OF CREATING.
What followed was nothing short of remarkable growth. Between 2020 and 2022,she had created well over 200 Wedding cakes, building a six-figure business from scratch - a testament not only to her talent, but to her instinctive understanding of what people truly value.
But numbers alone don’t tell the whole story. What sets Alison apart is not simply her technical skill - though that is undeniable - but her ability to translate emotion, landscape, and the very personal stories of her clients into edible form. Her cakes are not just cakes; they are exquisite canvases – one-of-a-kind, individually designed and hand painted in her signature style to the highest standard.
It is here, in this intersection between artistry, storytelling and place, that Alison has found her true voice.
Her journey has not been without challenge. In 2025, following a couple of significant personal chapters in her life, Alison stepped back - taking time to reflect, and reconnect with what truly mattered. It was a period of quiet recalibration, but also one of renewed clarity.
Now, she stands at the threshold of an exciting new chapter. With a clear vision and a deepened sense of purpose, Alison is preparing to take her business to a whole new level - moving firmly into the luxury space, where craftsmanship, detail and storytelling are not just appreciated, but expected. While Cumbria will always be her home and inspiration, she is now looking further afield, where her work resonates with a discerning audience who value beauty, individuality and meaning. There is also a growing desire to extend her creativity beyond cake making – with a beautifully illustrated cookery book inspired by Cumbrian life. Alongside this, a thoughtfully considered kitchen collection of linens, ceramics and tableware is also in the works to bring her signature countryside aesthetic into homes everywhere.
At its heart, Alison Fawkes’ story is really one of returning - to nature, to creativity, to storytelling and to the landscape that has always shaped her.
From her childhood on a Cumbrian farm to creating stunning cakes for some of the counties’ most elegant weddings and celebrations, her journey has come full circle.
